WHAT IS A TRANSFER SWITCH?
A transfer switch is an essential electrical component that allows a load—such as your home’s circuits—to switch between two power sources. Under normal conditions, electricity flows from the utility grid to your home’s main electrical panel, powering all your appliances and systems.
Once installed, the transfer switch intercepts the incoming power from the utility metre before it reaches your home. It constantly monitors the main power supply and, when it detects a loss or instability in utility power, it automatically transfers the electrical load to the standby generator. Once utility power is restored and stable, the switch safely returns the load to the main source.
Transfer switches are typically installed next to the residential hydro metre on the exterior wall of the home or cottage. However, they don’t have to be placed there—they can also be installed inside a garage or within the interior of the property, depending on site layout and installation requirements.
HOW DOES A TRANSFER SWITCH WORK?
A transfer switch is the intelligent bridge between your home’s main electrical panel and your backup generator. Here is how it works:
-
Monitoring Utility Power: Under normal conditions, your home receives steady power from the utility grid. The transfer switch continuously monitors this incoming power, ensuring that it meets the required stability standards.
-
Detecting an Outage: When the transfer switch detects a loss or significant fluctuation in the supply, it automatically isolates your home’s circuits from the unstable grid. This rapid response prevents any harmful electrical current from affecting your appliances.
-
Switching to Generator Power: Once the utility supply is deemed unstable or lost altogether, the switch seamlessly engages your backup generator. This transition happens quickly and efficiently so that your essential systems experience minimal downtime.
-
Reintegrating Utility Power: After the utility power has been restored and verified as stable, the transfer switch reverts your home back to the grid. This ensures that your system is always connected to the most reliable power source available.
This synchronized process, managed by our expertly installed transfer switches, ensures a smooth, safe, and immediate transition between power sources—protecting both your equipment and your peace of mind.

The service entrance models are specifically designed for use in areas where the utility service entrance is located outdoors, providing an added layer of protection against weather and environmental factors.
PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
When we install a transfer switch in Ottawa, Toronto, or anywhere in Ontario, we must obtain a permit from the municipal authority. The hydro company will come onsite to turn off the power from the grid to the property on the day of the installation. The power will be off for 2-4 hours. Once the installation is complete, the utility company returns to reconnect the main utility to your home.
WHY DO I NEED A TRANSFER SWITCH?
Investing in a transfer switch means investing in efficiency, reliability and safety. Benefits include:
-
Seamless Power Transition: Automatically shifts your electrical load from the utility to your backup generator during an outage, ensuring your essential systems stay up and running.
-
Versatility and Practicality: Allows you to power systems on your circuit breaker panel, meaning you won’t have to run extension cords from your generator to each appliance.
-
Enhanced Safety: Prevents accidental back feeding into the utility grid, safeguarding utility workers and your property from hazardous electrical surges.
-
Equipment Protection: Minimizes risks associated with voltage fluctuations and power surges, protecting sensitive electronics and appliances.
-
Regulatory Compliance: Keeps you in line with local electrical codes and standards, ensuring that your installation is both legal and secure.
